Recently K. T. McFarland wrote an article for Fox News. Its title was: Ukraine, Syria, Iran – America isn't leading from behind, it's being left behind. I thought a thought provoking article and decided to do my own research to determine the truth. In other words, Is America Being Left Behind?
The article began by noting that Russia, now flush with new-found wealth from its oil exports, is expanding its military and political influence abroad. The unfolding events in the Ukraine is just one example of this deterioration.
So is America in retreat? And is Russia now rising to take its place?
I'm going to take a look at the historical/current events in the light of Biblical prophecy. That said, let's start with the Bible.
It is a fact that nowhere in the Bible is America or the United States mentioned. Now in Ezekiel 38:13 we read:
“Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?”
Some people say that the “young lions” in this passage refers to the western world which includes America. But whether this is true or not, the United States is not on the screen even though we have been tied to the State of Israel since its inception.
When Russia threatens Israel in Ezekiel 38 the young lions protest but do not stop her.
So, for whatever reason, it appears the United States will not be involved in defending Israel. Of course we know that God Himself will protect her.
So let's break down this article point by point and see what conclusion we come to.
Missteps by the Obama Administration.
A. - The administration has presided over a series of foreign policy disasters, such as:
The Russian Reset – When Obama came into power he naively thought that he could bring about what he called a “reset.” This “reset” was meant to turn Russia from enemy to friend. Leading up to the 2012 election he fully expected to reap the benefits of his overtures to Russia – even promising that after the election he would have more freedom to act. Unfortunately for him (and the U.S.) Russia simply took and never gave back. Today Russia is basically ignoring the U.S. Position on the Ukraine. They hold the cards and they know it! In fact, the U.S. wasn't even part of the recent negotiations regarding the Ukraine!
Apology tour – Although he now denies it ever happened, those people who can read and think for themselves do remember that although he never mentioned “apology” he made a globe trotting trip emphasizing an apologetic attitude for the so-called American extremist attitude. This not only brought derision from our own politicians, but from our allies.
Our allies no long trust us – Although they have disagreed with us in the past, they always knew that we had their back. Now they look at America as almost a laughing stock. If not quite laughing, they are distancing themselves.
In the Middle East we've manage to alienate historic allies like Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.
Israel, our long time
ally and friend, now views the U.S. with suspicion. There is a
distinct chance that Israel will “go it alone” in the matter of
Iran! Which could lead to another world war. It is not that they are hostiles, but they cannot wait until Iran launches their missiles. It is a case of wait and you die.
Arab “friends” like Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia have been drifting away. In the case of Egypt, its rulers rightfully question U.S. Policy and are entertaining Russian overtures. Jordan and Saudi Arabia increasingly view us a weak and unreliable.
We've negotiated a deal with Iran that opens the way for more terrorist acts.
It essentially lets Iran off the hook and endangers the entire Middle East. Both Israel and its Arab neighbors view this as an open invitation for Iran to keep building or at least moving toward nuclear bombs, not to mention fomenting terrorism, cyberattacks and WMD.
Japan and South Korea doubt our reliability. With China looming as a major military force and the U.S. seemingly in retreat, one can hardly blame them. More about this in a moment.
The Chinese are making territorial claims in Asia. China has been eying Taiwan and its islands since the mid-twentieth century. President after President, Republican and Democratic, have not budged or blinked on the issue of Taiwan. That is, until President Obama. For the first time the U.S. has blinked and China has been emboldened!
The U.S. Is downsizing its armed forces. Just this past week the administration has announced more downsizing. Where our navy once had 15 carrier led task forces, we are now down to 9 or 10 and they plan on cutting back more. Also, the military has been a tool in the hands of Obama to get his way on other non-military issues. Further the military is under attack on other fronts: Gay or Sodomite rights, anti-Christian behavior in the armed forces, and other social and moral issues.
The U.S. Is edging toward moral bankruptcy. This last is not mentioned in the article, but it belongs on the list. I would dare say that the preceding six items would resolve themselves if this issue were taken care of. Here are examples of this moral bankruptcy:
The hijacking of our public school system. Our children are being robbed. Of what? Of a good education. Not only are they being taught that evolution is a fact (it is actually a theory), but they are being taught intolerance, as I will show. Also, our schools seem to be more concerned with graduation rates than actual learning, which results in students be socially promoted to the next grade even though they have not mastered the grade they are in.
As for intolerance, the schools teach that tolerance of gays (sodomites) is the ideal and they go out of their way to promote it. But tolerance of Christianity and any religion that opposes sodomy is a non-starter. In fact, the schools oppose us using both subtle and not-so-subtle methods. This intolerance also extends to anyone that opposes evolution. We are expected to be tolerant of evolution, but they are intolerant of creationism. You may think evolution is not a moral issue, but when you do the research you learn that evolution breeds racism, elitism, and a lot of other isms. I would say evolution breeds immorality. You may disagree, which is fine. But that is what I believe.
the empowerment of sodomites. Under cover of their political correct name of “gay” the practitioners of Sodomy (also known as homosexuality) have gained increasing power and influence. Today to be opposed to this immoral act brings accusations of being homophobic. But this is not the only area of immorality. Today it is considered normal for men and women to live together, even raise children, without ever getting married. In Jesus' day such lifestyles brought shame, banishment, and death; but today it is considered moral and normal.
Undermining of the home. Both Sodomy rights and women's rights are attacking the home. Women who choose to stay home and raise a family are being ridiculed instead of being praised. Also, this administration and previous administrations have been busy passing laws and making decrees that weaken the home. Our schools teach that sodomy is OK. Moreover, I have heard that the schools teach the kids to spy on their parents and report them for bad behavior (such as disciplining their children).
Socialism – the wikipedia definition of socialism is: a social and economic system characterized by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. Now wikipedia draws a distinction between socialism and welfare state. But this is an error. When you remove all the political mumbo jumbo, the welfare state draws its ideas from socialism. They just dress it up. At some point in our lives all of us, including yours truly, find ourselves dependent upon some form of welfare. The truth be told this did not start with President Obama, but you can go all the way back to President Wilson. The movement has been successful in that it has made us dependent; it has been unsuccessful in that instead of a better life which we were promised we actually survive now on the charity of the government. To wean ourselves off this dependency will be difficult if not impossible. The result: a weakened economy. This takes away from man's natural right of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As such it is immoral.
The War on Women – This is a war that has only recently been brought to light although it has been going on for decades. I am NOT talking about the so-called Republican Party War on Women. That is imaginary and designed to cover up the real war. The real war on women is not relegated to one party, although the Democratic Party practices it. This war is actually fought by women – liberal women, that is. Although cloaked in high-sounding words likes women's rights, it goes well beyond the traditional meaning of such words. Lately this real War on Women has come to light and more and more women are opposing it. The fact is that the left's War on Women pictures women as helpless before the almighty society. In reality women are proving themselves in a large variety of endeavors, some while staying at home and raising a family. This late engagement by conservative women is making a profound affect. The question is, Are they too late?
So the question remains, Is America Being Left Behind?
Now the article ended on a positive note. McFarland pointed to cheap oil and natural gas (both home produced) bringing back manufacturing. He also believes that the economy will pick up and unemployment will vanish; America will become energy independent. He also thinks that we will be energy exporters to countries like China, India, and Japan. And the inevitable lower oil and gas prices will bankrupt Russia.
Is McFarland right? I don't know. But I don't think an economic upsurge will change things enough to keep America on the International stage unless and until a nationwide revival takes place. Because moral bankruptcy will not disappear simply because we are on a strong economic upturn. Only a spiritual revival will bring back moral rightness.
So how does that happen? First, we must pray for revival. But if our prayers are to be honored by God we need to examine our own lives and bring them under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The decision is ours!
